To celebrate The Gruffalo's 20th anniversary, we held a competition in partnership with Macmillan Children’s Books, encouraging children aged 5 - 11 to write their own story of what happened next to their favourite character from The Gruffalo.

1,600 children from across the UK entered the competition and the winning entry was written by Elise Renshaw of Kingsway Primary School, with her story entitled Fox's Revenge.

Elise receives a signed copy of the The Gruffalo, a Gruffalo hamper and her school will be given £250 worth of Macmillan Children’s Books books whilst each of the 20 runners up will receive a signed copy of The Gruffalo.

My mum used to read The Gruffalo to us at bedtime. When this competition was announced I decided I would like to do my own story as I love reading. When I found out I had won, I was astonished and could not believe it.

All schools who took part were given an activity pack (including fun ideas, templates and a kit to turn their classroom into the deep dark wood), a downloadable certificate for all students and the first 100 schools that registered received a copy of The Gruffalo play script.

The Gruffalo competition created a real buzz around school and inspired us to hold a Gruffalo Day so the whole school from Nursery to Year 6 could celebrate his birthday. We are extremely proud of Elise and how hard she worked on her entry.
