Celebrate the Queen's reign and encourage reading for pleasure with our Platinum Jubilee Royal Reading Challenge!

Aim of the reading challenge

To celebrate 70 years of the Queen’s reign we are encouraging students aged 5-14 years to read as much as they can across the weeks surrounding this once-in-a-lifetime event, whilst also discovering lots of fun and interesting facts along the way.

This reading challenge:

  • is easy to deliver
  • includes designed resources ready to use
  • supports any class planning to engage with this moment of living history
  • focuses on improving the reading culture within school

The challenge has been developed in partnership with DK publishing and is linked to Queen Elizabeth: A Platinum Jubilee Celebration being published to celebrate the Queen's reign. Find out more about the book and supporting resources, including free audiobook, on the DK Jubilee webpages.

Taking part in the challenge

A full set of supporting resources are available to download from this page and include:

  • teacher guidelines
  • class timeline wall chart
  • reading logs
  • set of class crown markers

On Monday 23 May we ran a live, 30-minute draw-along with Steve Antony, author of The Queen's Hat, and presented by Holly King-Mand.

A recording of this event is available to watch back on our Jubilee resources for schools page, and could be included as part of your reading challenge activities.

How to run the challenge

We recommend you first take a look at the Teacher Guidelines which outline the challenge in full and explain how you can use the resources provided. The guidelines also include suggestions for how you can extend the challenge further.

Next, download and print out all the various materials you want to use with your class. Ideally each student should be provided with a reading log to fill in, and a crown to pin to the class timeline wall chart so that they can watch their reading milestones increase throughout the challenge.

The challenge is available for seven weeks of this term, opening on Tuesday 3 May and closing on Friday 1 July.

Enter our Jubilee competition

The challenge is designed to be run in schools, and is suitable for pupils aged 5-14 years (Key Stages 1, 2 and 3/Years P1 to S3).

At the end of the Royal Reading Challenge, classes across the UK can choose to enter our Platinum Jubilee competition and create their very own treasure box of memories from this historic year.

A winner will be drawn at random on Friday 8 July and if your entry wins then your school will receive, courtesy of DK, an amazing box of books and £100 DK voucher for the teacher!

Don’t miss out on this royal opportunity to help reading for pleasure, reading stamina and reading diversely within your school. It is free to access the resources and take part, though you'll need to be logged in or to register for a basic, free account on our website.
