We partnered with World Book Day through our Read Manchester campaign to bring the world’s biggest celebration of reading for pleasure to Manchester. With the support of the UK National Cycling Centre and WHSmith we brought the free event to the Manchester Velodrome this World Book Day.
Over 1,000 Manchester school children from 18 different schools came to see six of the UK’s best-loved children’s authors and illustrators bring books to life for World Book Day.
We have supported World Book Day in bringing its hugely successful Share a Story Live tour to three communities across the UK where low levels of literacy are seriously impacting people’s lives: Hasting, Manchester and Middlesbrough.
We work in each of these areas to bring together local businesses, health, education, and cultural organisations to help tackle literacy challenges in the community.
The Manchester event boasted a stellar line-up including:
- TV and radio presenter, and author of the Toto the Ninja Cat series, Dermot O’Leary
- Children’s Laureate and creator of How to Train Your Dragon, Cressida Cowell
- Three bestselling World Book Day 2020 authors Onjali Q. Raúf (The Day We Met the Queen) and Robin Stevens (The Case of the Drowned Pearl: A Murder Most Unladylike Mini-Mystery)
- Compered by Steven Butler, the Roald Dahl Funny Prize shortlisted author, actor, and playwright
Following the event, WHSmith sold copies of the £1 World Book Day titles.Read Manchester also provided 1,000 more signed copies of a wider selection of titles available at a special World Book Day discount.
“I love visiting schools and chatting to the kids about what they enjoy reading and writing about so I was delighted to be part of the Share a Story Live event.”Dermot O’Leary
