This course

This online training involves two hour-long sessions and introduces teachers to interactive discussion and vocabulary activities for mathematics learning

Part one: Wednesday 26 February 2025 16:00-17:00

Part two: Wednesday 12 March 2025 16:00-17:00

Course content

During the course staff will:

  • Understand what is meant by disciplinary literacy in mathematics
  • Use evidence from research to investigate effective literacy strategies for speaking, reading and vocabulary development in mathematics
  • Explore strategies for improving comprehension of multi-stage word problems
  • Identifying and using command words in mathematics
  • Developing and designing spoken tasks

Audience

Teachers of mathematics at KS3 who teach groups with weaker communication skills. It may also support higher-level teaching assistants working with SEN and EAL learners in maths lessons
