Raising Standards in Reading Comprehension CPD

Education Endowment Fund (EEF) guidance for Key Stage 2 reports extensive evidence to show that explicit teaching of comprehension improves literacy.

In response to the challenges presented by the Key Stage 2 SATs we have developed a new programme to help teachers develop strategies to improve reading comprehension.

"Very informative and clear - will pass on to colleagues at school."

Participant, East Acton Primary School

About the course

Raising Standards in Reading Comprehension is aimed at teachers and literacy leaders in Key Stage 2.

  • Inspire and motivate colleagues from across the school to embed great literacy provision in their teaching

With each school getting a year’s membership of the National Literacy Trust, all staff in your school can access a great range of resources to support classroom practice

  • Build a knowledge of quality texts

Key to great comprehension teaching is an exciting range of books for pupils to engage with. As well as classroom strategies, participants will look at a range of extracts from picture and chapter books.

  • Explore inference as key to making great readers

Unpick the reading process and develop an understanding of what to look for in assessing comprehension

  • Engage with research to develop your own project

The DfE states that the best CPD involves time for critical reflection. We present you with strategies but have a gap between sessions for you to test approaches in your own classroom and identify what works.
