Our work in the Black Country is community driven, which means we need as many local people and businesses to support and collaborate with us.

  • Over two thirds of children and young people in the West Midlands say they don't enjoy reading in their spare time.

    In a 2025 report by the National Literacy Trust almost 2 in 3 children and young people aged 8 to 18 years old said they do not enjoy reading in their free time in 2025.

  • Two of the four local authorities in the Black Country are in the top 20 most vulnerable to literacy need in the country.

    National Literacy Trust and Experian research found that out of England's 533 constituencies, Wolverhampton and Walsall rank 9th and 16th for greatest literacy need.

  • Disadvantaged children fall behind before they even start school

    Last year, 35% of five-year-olds in Sandwell, Dudley, Walsall and Wolverhampton did not have the reading and writing skills expected of their age by the time they started school.
