Read North East Literacy Champions

Could you offer your free time delivering reading activities in your local area, whilst developing new skills?

We’re on the lookout for people across the Newcastle, Gateshead, Stockton and Redcar to become Literacy Champions online and in their local communities, as part of our Read North East campaign to raise literacy levels.

What is a Literacy Champion?

Literacy Champions want to help improve literacy in their community. You could be a student, parent, grandparent, business professional, teacher, retiree or anyone passionate about making a difference in their local area. You can support in person or online and we’ll provide training to get you up and running.

Literacy Champions reach out to their communities, encouraging and inspiring them to engage with literacy.

Why does the North East need Literacy Champions?

Not being able to read, write or communicate well holds people back at every stage of their life. As a child they won't be able to succeed at school, as a young adult they will be locked out of the job market, and on becoming a parent they won't be able to support their child's learning.

At Read North East, we’re passionate about addressing the barriers to engagement in literacy and making sure that nobody gets left behind. Our aim is for everyone in the North East to have a love for reading and we believe it’s never too late to find that love.

We need your help to reach those in the region who need our help the most.

What will a being a Literacy Champion involve?

You know your local community and the issues facing it better than anyone. As a Literacy Champion, you will be supported to create and share online pictures, videos and advice through social media and even create your own projects if you want to. Other activities may include blog writing, proof-reading or hosting a reading group!

You will have access to training, support and information from the Read North East team, helping you to encourage people to enjoy reading and make it a part of their everyday lives.
