This year, we’re inviting schools around Doncaster to join us as we explore maths-themed stories - a great way for children to visualise mathematical concepts, imagine using maths to solve problems, and enjoy maths in a new and creative way.
To help inspire your own stories, explore some of these tales created by classes in Doncaster and Rotherham as part of the project:
Monkey wants a Banana Tree by Windhill Primary School, Mexborough, Doncaster
Captain Crook’s Treasure by Kimberworth Primary School, Rotherham
Max’s Party by St Peter’s Catholic Primary School, Doncaster
Monster Match by Kirkby Avenue Primary School, Doncaster
Money for Honey by Montagu Primary Academy, Mexborough, Doncaster
Too Many Meteors by Bentley High Street Primary School, Doncaster
The Great Shape Race by Balby Central Primary Academy
Enter our Collaborative Christmas Maths Story competition
This autumn term, we’re inviting you to write a Christmas-themed maths story as a class. Work together to come up with your own seasonal tale that involves maths in some way.
What numbers does Santa need to deliver his presents? Who can make a mess with measures when making Christmas dinner? Is there a tale to tell about shapes in the snow?
We've put together a really handy tutorial on how you can work together to come up with a fun maths-based story - just check out the video below!
Collaborate as a class and email your stories to phil.sheppard@literacytrust.org.uk
Don't forget to check out our YouTube channel for some inspiration! The winning class will receive a bundle of books and a visit to school to record your story for our YouTube channel.
You can also visit the Maths Through Stories website to find more maths-themed story books for your classroom.
Individual maths story writing competition
In the Spring term, we will be encouraging all Doncaster children to write their own ‘Maths Through Stories’ tales. Watch out for more information and resources coming soon!
