As part of our Bradford Stories campaign, we’re looking for people across Bradford to become Literacy Champions in online and in their local communities.

What is a Literacy Champion?

Literacy Champions want to help improve literacy in their community. They could be a parent, business professional, teacher, student, sports coach or anyone passionate about making a difference in their local area.

With face to face activity restricted due to social distancing, Literacy Champions reach out to their local community online, encouraging and inspiring them to engage with literacy though social media and other digital methods. You don’t need to be a technical wizard to do this and we’ll provide training to get you up and running.

Why does Bradford need Literacy Champions?

In Bradford last year, 40% of children left primary school unable to read at the expected level for their age.

Not being able to read, write or communicate well holds people back at every stage of their life. As a child they won't be able to succeed at school, as a young adult they will be locked out of the job market, and on becoming a parent they won't be able to support their child's learning.

We need you to reach those in Bradford who need our help the most.

What will a being a Literacy Champion involve?

You know your local community and the issues facing it better than anyone. As a Literacy Champion, you will be supported to create and share online pictures, videos and advice through social media and even create your own projects if you want to.

You will have access to training, support and information from the Bradford Stories team, helping you to reach those in your community who need help most.
