This online training course exploring disciplinary reading in secondary subjects involves two 90-minute sessions

Who should attend

This two-part course explores the importance of developing academic reading skills to enable students to access the curriculum in all subjects. It is suitable for all subject teachers, who would like to learn how to support reading in their subject, and for literacy leaders, who have a remit for developing reading skills across the curriculum.

In the two 90-minute sessions, you will learn about:

  • What is disciplinary reading; how knowledge defines the text.
  • The reading challenges of transition from Primary to Secondary
  • Active reading strategies to develop comprehension in subject (disciplinary) texts
  • The reading behaviours and attitudes of adolescents
  • Strategies to adapt and scaffold texts for struggling readers

Preparing for the sessions

To participate fully in a session, you will need a working microphone and camera. Please note, sessions are not recorded.
