This course

This online training involves two 90-minute sessions.

Course content

Building Vocabulary part one: Whole school leadership

  • Examine recent research into the vocabulary gap and its correlation with attainment
  • Consider the role of academic language in the curriculum and the challenge of the ‘vocabulary jump’ at transition
  • Support subject leaders to plan a strategic approach to the teaching of vocabulary

Building Vocabulary part two: Teaching and learning

  • Develop an understanding of indirect and direct vocabulary acquisition
  • Explore strategies to support direct vocabulary teaching in a range of curriculum subjects
  • Build knowledge of word morphology and how to teach it
