Who should attend

Drawing on over 20 years of our own research on children’s and young people’s reading for enjoyment as well as other leading researchers and practitioners in the field, this two-part course explores reading motivation, the importance of valuing and promoting all types of texts, including multi-modal and digital reading platforms.

It is suitable for all subject teachers, who would like to learn more about how to support students’ reading enjoyment at school and at home; librarians, who want to improve their understanding of how reading can support the development of students’ literacy within the curriculum, and literacy leaders developing whole-school practice in reading.

In the two 90-minute sessions, you will learn about:

  • Research on reading for pleasure, including the impact of lock-down on reading for pleasure
  • Approaches to support intrinsic motivation for reading
  • Ways of using multi-modal reading to encourage reading for pleasure
  • The use of digital tools to encourage reading for pleasure in school and at home and support a blended learning
  • The central role of school libraries in addressing diversity and promoting a rich and broad reading experience
