Who should attend

This course is suitable for teachers, who have extended writing in their subject, and want to learn more about how to develop students’ stamina and skills to tackle longer writing tasks. It is also suitable for literacy leaders, who want to gain an understanding of how to support teachers to develop writing in their subject. Participating teachers are expected to implement some tasks with a class between sessions.

What you will gain from attending

In the two 90-minute sessions, you will learn about:

  • The cognitive challenge of writing
  • Review research into what works in teaching writing to adolescents
  • What a new year 7 student working at the expected level can do
  • Genre, purpose and audience in KS3 and 4 subject writing
  • A sequence for teaching writing (modelling, planning and editing)
  • How to build students’ motivation and confidence in paragraph writing
  • How to use success criteria to help students evaluate their own and others’ writing

Preparing for the sessions

To participate fully in a session, you will need a working microphone and camera. Please note, sessions are not recorded.
