Who should attend?
This two-part course explores the role of literacy in the secondary science curriculum, and how to promote ways of developing talk, reading and writing in this subject. It is suitable for subject leaders and teachers who are new to or developing their understanding of disciplinary literacy in science.

What you will gain from attending
In the two 90-minute sessions, you will learn about:
- How teaching subject-specific (disciplinary) literacy skills can unlock science subject content
- A range of practical classroom strategies on how to teach literacy skills in science, with examples
- How to develop students’ scientific vocabulary e. g. the use of etymology and morphology
- How to develop metacognitive talk in science
- How to use a range of active reading strategies to enable students to engage with scientific texts
- How to use text modelling strategies to improve writing in science
Preparing for the sessions
To participate fully in a session, you will need a working microphone and camera. Please note, sessions are not recorded.
