About this course

Build an understanding of the role of literacy in the secondary physical education curriculum, and how to promote ways of developing talk, reading and writing in this subject.

This online training involves two 90-minute sessions

Who should attend

This course is for teachers or coaches of physical education at KS3 (part one only) or teachers of GCSE PE and BTEC at KS4 (parts one and two). It explores the role of literacy in the secondary Physical Education curriculum, and how to promote ways of developing talk, reading and writing in this subject. It is suitable for subject leaders and teachers who are new to or developing their understanding of disciplinary literacy in Physical Education or Sports Science.

What you will gain from attending

In the two 90-minute sessions, you will learn about:

  • How teaching subject-specific (disciplinary) literacy skills can unlock subject content in PE
  • A range of practical classroom strategies on how to teach literacy skills in PE, with examples

In part one, you will learn about: 

  • How to use oral discussion and modelling strategies to build subject knowledge and vocabulary
  • Strategies for teaching vocabulary in PE e.g. etymology and morphology

In part two, you will learn about:

  • How audience and purpose define language choices
  • How to use a range of active reading strategies to enable students to engage with texts in PE
  • How to use models and sentence combining strategies to improve extended answers at KS4
