About this course

This course is designed to equip maths teachers and subject leaders with the skills to develop literacy for learning mathematics in the classroom.

This online training involves two 90-minute sessions

Who should attend?

This two-part course explores the role of literacy in the secondary mathematics curriculum, and how to promote ways of developing talk, reading and writing in this subject. It is suitable for subject leaders and teachers, who are new to, or developing their understanding of disciplinary literacy in mathematics.

What you will gain from attending  

In the two 90-minute sessions, you will learn about:

  • How teaching subject-specific (disciplinary) literacy skills can unlock mathematical subject content
  • A range of practical classroom strategies on how to teach literacy skills in mathematics, with examples
  • How to develop students’ mathematical vocabulary e.g. the use of etymology, morphology, the register continuum
  • How to develop mathematical talk for problem solving
  • How to use a variety of active reading strategies to enable students to engage with a range of mathematical texts
  • How to use text modelling strategies to improve writing in mathematics

Preparing for the sessions

To participate fully in a session, you will need a working microphone and camera. Please note, sessions are not recorded.
