Who should attend?

This two-part course explores the role of literacy in the secondary history curriculum and how to promote ways of developing talk, reading and writing in this subject. It is suitable for subject leaders and teachers who are new to or developing their understanding of disciplinary literacy in history.

In the two 90-minute sessions, you will learn about:

  • How teaching subject-specific (disciplinary) literacy skills can unlock subject content in history
  • A range of practical classroom strategies on how to teach literacy skills in history, with examples
  • How to support students’ vocabulary acquisition for history
  • How to use a variety of active reading strategies to enable students to engage with a range of historical texts
  • How to move students informal talk into formal, academic written language
  • Modelling strategies to improve extended writing in history
