About this course

Examine the role of academic language in the secondary curriculum and promote ways of teaching different tiers of vocabulary in a range of subjects.

This course consists of two parts There is the option to book on one or both parts.

Breakdown of the course

Part one focuses on leading the development of academic vocabulary in all subjects and is suitable for those with a strategic role in leading literacy, or an aspiring leader.

Part two focuses on teaching and learning strategies to develop academic vocabulary in the curriculum. It is suitable for teachers of all subjects, as well as those with a strategic literacy role, who would like to develop their understanding of pedagogical approaches to vocabulary development, relevant to all subjects.

What you will gain from attending  

In Building Vocabulary part one: Whole school leadership, you will learn about: 

  • Recent research into the vocabulary gap and its correlation with attainment
  • The role of academic language in the curriculum and the challenge of the ‘vocabulary jump’ at transition
  • How to support subject leaders to plan a strategic approach to the teaching of vocabulary

In Building Vocabulary part two: Teaching and learning, you will learn about: 

  • Indirect and direct vocabulary acquisition
  • Strategies to support direct vocabulary teaching
  • The importance of word morphology and how to teach it

Preparing for the sessions

To participate fully in a session, you will need a working microphone and camera. Please note, sessions are not recorded.
