What is Next Chapter?
The National Literacy Trust, in partnership with University College London, have developed this resource designed to support 11 to 13-year-olds who have lost interest in reading, find their own pathway back. The resource utilises a key relationship between tutor and student, where they can find a relatable link to the world of reading, and a safe and autonomous environment is established.
This 12-week resource has been designed to be delivered as an intervention, taking time outside of lessons to see what place reading can have to the young people we teach.
The resource aims to:
- encourage positive reading behaviours by building confidence in reading skills.
- improve students’ attitude towards reading.
- explore book choice through a variety of texts.
Using this resource in your school
This resource was designed to be delivered to students in an after-school style setting. It was written to be delivered by tutor mentors, who can provide a relatable link to the world of reading. Where possible we recommend that these factors are maintained to ensure the best out of this 12-week intervention.
Included in this resource:
- a tutor guide, with step by step session plan and additional materials for delivering the project
- a printable student reading journal
- a suggested book list to support the delivery of the intervention
