Unlocking reading for pleasure through autonomy and choice

Why does book choice matter?
When children have the freedom to choose what they read, their motivation and engagement grow.
Our research report on Children and young people's reading in 2025, highlights how freedom of choice, alongside matching reading to an existing interest or hobby, as a fundamental driver for motivation to read.
Allowing pupils to select texts that reflect their interests and identities helps them connect with stories and ideas in meaningful ways. Choice also opens the door to new genres and perspectives, building confidence and a stronger sense of themselves as readers.
By offering a variety of options: novels, comics, magazines, poetry and non-fiction, you create an inclusive reading environment that nurtures curiosity and a lifelong love of reading.
