Game Changers

Just 1% of pupils in alternative provision settings achieve five good GCSEs. We’re working to level the playing field through the power of football.

Game Changers includes:

  • Football-themed reading lessons

Lessons are based around texts which show students the relevance of reading to their lives and the lives of sporting heroes.

  • Free books and resources

Schools and settings participating in Game Changers will receive a box of engaging books as well as student workbooks, certificates, stickers and a poster.

  • Practical football challenges

After their reading lessons, students will take on football challenges linked to the texts they've been reading in class.

About the programme

We believe that excluded students deserve to have the same opportunities as their peers in mainstream schools. That's why we developed Game Changers, a new reading intervention targeted at secondary students in pupil referral units and alternative provision schools. Game Changers uses football-themed activities, texts and role-models to motivate and equip students to read.

Game Changers is offered free of charge and will be implemented in 150 settings across England and Wales.

Schools that sign up to deliver Game Changers will receive a full set of resources for 20 lessons. Coaches from 15 football clubs including Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion will also work with some schools to deliver the programme.
