Game Changers

Just 1% of pupils in alternative provision settings achieve 5 good GCSEs. We’re working to change that through the power of football.

About the programme

We believe that excluded students deserve to have the same opportunities as their peers in schools. Game Changers uses football-themed reading lessons, combined with practical football activities, to improve the reading skills of young people.

From January 2020, the programme will be delivered in 80 pupil referral units and alternative provision settings across England and Wales.

Game Changers includes:

  • Football-themed reading lessons

Lessons are based around books which show students the relevance of reading to their lives and the lives of sporting heroes.

  • Practical football challenges

After their reading lessons, students will take on football challenges, linked to the texts they've been reading in class.

  • Role models from local football clubs

Coaches from 15 football clubs including Liverpool, Leicester City and Nottingham Forest will work with schools to deliver Game Changers.
