Course overview

This course helps teachers develop strategies to take their Key Stage 2 pupils beyond scaffolded writing, building confidence and self-assessment skills, and providing a structure for pupils to tackle writing challenges across different text types.

In our recent research report, Children and young people's writing in 2023, just a third of children and young people aged 8 to 18 told us that they enjoyed writing in their free time in early 2023. This is one of the lowest levels of writing enjoyment we have evidenced since 2010. As we continue to record alarmingly low levels of writing enjoyment, Improving Writing in KS2 (IPEELL) provides children with opportunities to take ownership of the writing process and improve their confidence and stamina.

What will I learn?

  • Transferable approaches to aid the organisation of writing
Discover methods to support the organisation of pupils' writing in any form and across all subject areas.
  • How to utilise memorable experiences
Use class visits and cultural experiences effectively so children engage with and develop their writing
  • Ownership of progress using self-assessment tools, peer assessment and goal setting
Support pupils' meta-cognitive skills so that they are able to identify success criteria and acknowledge areas for improvement.
  • Confidence and more positive attitudes toward writing in the classroom
Motivational messages are used successfully in a wide range of contexts, but rarely in academic subjects. Discover the empowering impact of this approach when setting writing tasks.
