What is Stoke 100 Reads?
The city of Stoke-on-Trent is turning 100 years old this year!
Together with Stoke-on-Trent Libraries, we’re on the hunt to find our city’s 100 favourite children’s books to celebrate 100 years of Stoke, as part of our mission to #GrowAGenerationOfReaders. Can you help us?
We know that when children have books recommended to them, they are more likely to want to read (2 in 5, or 38.4%). So your recommendations matter.
Imagine an empty shelf – which books would you choose to fill it with? Think about whose stories you’re interested in hearing, what topics inspire you, or which worlds you would want to visit.
How can you be part of Stoke 100 Reads?
We want children of all ages and the adults in their lives to suggest books they would recommend to others in our city. These titles will be added to our special Centenary Bookcase and become our Stoke 100 Reads book list.
We are looking for the city’s favourite books for two lists:
- A primary list (children aged 0-5 & 6-11)
- A secondary list (children aged 11-16)
What are Book Detectives?
We’re asking you to become a Book Detective. These are readers of any age who, with the assistance of family members and teachers, become experts in exploring books, all to choose stories which are interesting and enjoyable to read.
We want to give you plenty of time to choose your favourite read, so you will have six months to take part in the Book Detective activities and pick a book to nominate for the list.
Families can support their children in choosing a book by using our amazing Trainee Book Detective's Notebook when you next visit your library. You'll be surprised how much they already know!
Teachers can support their students by incorporating our specially designed Lesson Plans into a class library visit. Watch this space as it's coming soon.
About Stoke 100 Reads over the years
Stoke 100 Reads was first introduced back in 2016 by Stoke Speaks Out. It promoted a love of reading for pleasure amongst children and encouraged families to read together throughout Stoke-on-Trent. Since then, thousands of new children’s books have been published so we think it’s time to refresh, renew and republish a brand new Stoke 100 Reads list. But we can’t do it alone. Just as we did in 2016, we’re asking for your suggestions for what we should include in the list.
Supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
