Salford's Happy Facts

As part of our ambition to Grow A Generation of Readers, we're launching a year-long campaign to boost reading for pleasure across the city.

Salford’s Happy Facts

We know that children are more motivated to read when its about something that fascinates them; be it space, the animal kingdom, famous inventions or sport.

Tapping into this curiosity and eagerness to know more is a great way to inspire reading for pleasure.

Thats why the Salford Happy Facts campaign will capture the topics that most interest local children, and use these as a springboard to make reading non-fiction books enjoyable and relevant.

Across a year of events and activities, we will bring these facts to life by connecting them to people, places and spaces across Salford.

Why is reading for pleasure important?

Our research demonstrated that children and young people who read in their free time:

  • Feel happy, relaxed, and confident

  • Understand the views of others

  • Learn new things

  • Develop the literacy skills they need to get the most out of life

What will this involve?

Inspired by Emily Coxhead’s Happy Days: 365 Facts to Brighten Every Day of the Year, we will develop fun classroom resources, curated book lists and events for teachers to bring reading non-fiction to life in schools.

We will empower parents to encourage reading for pleasure at home and deliver community storytelling events and city-wide ‘happy facts’ trails for them to take part in as a family.

Local partners including Salford Foundation, The Lowry and BBC, have pledged to help make this activity possible and connect children’s ‘happy facts’ with the city they call home.

Everyone has a role to play in inspiring Salford’s next generation to discover a love of reading and develop the literacy skills they need to grow, learn, and thrive.
