United in Reading

United in Reading is a city-wide initiative led by the National Literacy Trust, in partnership with the Peterborough United Foundation and local schools. Together, we’re on a mission to help children discover the joy of reading using the magic of football.
The United in Reading challenge
Reading for pleasure is one of the most important things a child can do to boost their learning, wellbeing, and confidence.
In a region where reading enjoyment is falling, we're combining the power of sport and stories to turn the tide. With the help of the Peterborough United Foundation, the National Literacy Trust in Peterborough is inviting schools to take part in the United in Reading challenge.
How the challenge works
Each school sets its own terms for the reading challenge based on what works best for their pupils and goals. That could mean:
- Tracking the number of books read
- Tracking the number of words read
- Visiting the school library more often
- Whatever works for your school, works for us!
The most important thing is to encourage reading for pleasure in a way that’s meaningful and motivating for your pupils.
The challenge will launch with a special assembly delivered by the National Literacy Trust and the Peterborough United Foundation to inspire children to kick off their love of reading.
The class or group of pupils that shows the most enthusiasm or progress (as decided by each school) will win a free football session led by the brilliant team at Peterborough United Foundation - a fun and active way to celebrate reading success!

How to get involved
All schools in Peterborough are eligible to register an interest in joining the challenge.
