Peterborough Pledge
The National Literacy Trust in Peterborough has designed a pledge to support schools across Peterborough in embedding a whole-school culture that celebrates and promotes reading for pleasure. This initiative encourages schools to reflect on their current practices and policies, and provides a framework for development and improvement.
Why reading for pleasure matters
Our latest research reveals the lowest levels of reading for pleasure in 20 years. This decline is concerning, as reading for pleasure is closely linked to:
- Improved literacy and language skills
- Enhanced wellbeing and confidence
- Greater academic success.
Children have told us, however, that aligning reading with their personal interests makes them more motivated to read. When children see themselves in books - and when reading is seen as fun, social, and relevant - they are more likely to read regularly and with enthusiasm.
If we can encourage a culture of reading for pleasure and create a daily reading habit, children are more likely to build the vital literacy skills they need to thrive.

What our pledge offers
By signing up to the pledge, Peterborough schools commit to reflecting on:
- The emphasis placed on promoting reading for pleasure
- How effectively reading for pleasure is embedded within the school’s culture
The pledge is not a checklist, rather a conversation starter and a commitment to continuous improvement.
We provide a curated set of resources to help schools evaluate their current provision and identify areas for development.
The pledge document includes key questions and signposts to resources that support:
- Self-evaluation
- Development planning
- Provision and curriculum design
- Staff CPD
- Engaging parents and carers
- Connecting with the wider community.
