Get Kids Reading with Diary of a Wimpy Kid
You're helping us to grow a generation of readers

This summer, thousands of WHSmith travel store customers like you, and young fans of Jeff Kinney's hilarious Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series, are helping us to grow a generation of readers.
Thank you!
Together, we are championing literacy and raising funds to support our mission to empower children and young people with the literacy skills they need to thrive, particularly in communities across the UK where low literacy levels are seriously impacting people’s lives.
How we are getting more kids reading this summer
We have joined forces with Puffin and WHSmith to Get Kids Reading with Diary of a Wimpy Kid. 50p shall be given to the National Literacy Trust (charity number 1116260) for every copy of a Diary of a Wimpy Kid book sold by WHSmith’s Travel stores in the UK and Ireland between the 12 June 2025 to 3 September 2025 up to a maximum of 60,000 copies.
By joining forces and working together, we can ignite a love of reading in schools and communities across the country.
What's in Diary of a Wimpy Kid?
50% WORDS, 50% COMICS, 100% HILARIOUS!
Wimpy Kid delivers laughter at every page and keeps kids reading! With nineteen books (and counting!) to discover, get ready to laugh out loud with Greg Heffley and his family this summer. Over 300 million copies sold worldwide.

Why is reading important?
Our latest research reveals that the reading crisis in the UK continues, with children’s reading for enjoyment and daily reading at their lowest levels in twenty years. Only 1 in 3 children enjoy reading in their free time and only 1 in 5 read daily for fun.
"Getting kids excited and inspired by books – showing them that reading can be fun – has never been more important. We all know how a book can make a huge difference to a young reader - and in some cases, even change a life. That’s why I’m thrilled that Diary of a Wimpy Kid is part of this initiative with WHSmith, helping to further the National Literacy Trust’s mission to make access to books a reality for all."

There are still more children who need your help
Can you help us reach even more children?
Donate today and your generosity will support our ongoing work with communities, schools and local partners to fund resources, including free books for young children who are unlikely to own one, and interventions to help improve their reading skills.
This is where your money could go:
- £7 could give a child the chance to go to a fun event in their community to discover the magic of books and nursery rhymes.
- £10 could enable three families from disadvantaged communities to attend motivational reading events, inspiring them to read for pleasure and giving them the tools to support their children’s literacy skills at home.
- £15 enables us to give books to children in deprived areas of the UK, where 1 in 8 children don’t have a book of their own.
- £20 could allow a child from a disadvantaged community to choose and keep three new books at inspirational reading and storytelling events.
- £50 helps train a volunteer to give parents with low literacy levels the confidence and skills to help develop their child’s literacy and communication skills.
- £100 or more could contribute towards our work in communities facing the biggest literacy and poverty challenges in the UK, helping to create long-term change for children and families.
