The power of writing
National Writing Day celebrates the power of writing as a tool for creativity, enjoyment and self-expression. It encourages learners of all ages to experiment with ideas, play with language, and discover their own voice, without the pressure of getting everything perfect on the first attempt.
Writing is a process of exploration. It draws on inspiration from what we read, invites us to try new approaches, and helps build confidence through regular practice. This focus on enjoyment reflects our wider research at the National Literacy Trust, which highlights the importance of engaging and meaningful writing experiences in developing positive literacy habits.
Suitable for both primary and secondary settings, this resource offers three engaging activities, each focusing on a key aspect of effective writing:
- Taking inspiration from existing texts
- Experimenting with structure and rhythm
- Making thoughtful word choices
Each activity encourages pupils to explore ideas in different ways, whether by:
- adapting a text they have read
- playing with patterns and repetition, or
- constructing new pieces from carefully selected vocabulary.
These activities demonstrate how writing can evolve from small sparks of inspiration into something original and meaningful, aligning with evidence that motivation and creativity are essential drivers of successful writing development.
Designed with flexibility in mind, these activities can be used as quick warm-ups, extended lessons, or combined into a creative sequence of learning.
Each area of focus includes ideas for ages 5 to 7 (KS1/P2-3), 7 to 11 (KS2/P4-7), 11 to 14 (KS3/S1-3), and 14 to 16 (KS4/S4-5).
They can also be easily adapted for different ages and abilities, making them suitable for a wide range of classroom contexts.
The aim of this resource is to support pupils in developing confidence, curiosity and enjoyment in writing, which are key elements in fostering long-term engagement with literacy and nurturing lifelong readers and writers.
