Spotted on your streets: Young City Poets

Where will your words take you?

Have you seen the words of our young poets on billboards across the country? With the generous support of Pilot Pens, four incredible Young City Poets have had their poetry displayed nationwide – celebrating the power and creativity of young voices.

About our Young City Poets programme

Young City Poets empowers pupils in socio-economically disadvantaged areas of London discover the joy of writing and the confidence to share their voices. Pupils visit a culture venue in the city to spark their imaginations, work alongside a professional poet to develop their writing, and perform their poets in front of a live audience. Each poem is published in an anthology, giving every young writer’s words a lasting platform.

"The children who came to the performance usually struggle with their writing confidence and this has given them so much happiness and confidence. It supported children to understand that writing can be about anything, including the world around them.”

Why is poetry important?

Poetry doesn’t have to be perfect. It can provide new freedom to begin writing for pleasure and creating without rules - there's no “doing it wrong”. Poetry gives children and young people space to find and express their voice, identity and emotions.
