About the event
Join Mevan Babakar on Friday 20 June for an event in which your class, together with pupils from across the UK, will have the chance to hear from Mevan herself about her book The Bicycle. This story of hope and kindness relates Mevan's own experiences; it was co-written with Patricia McCormick, and evocatively illustrated by Yas Imamura.
Mevan will first read through The Bicycle, and then discuss its themes and message. She will explore and unpack questions such as:
- How can we make people feel ‘big’?
- How can I make refugees feel welcome?
- What is an act of kindness?
The session will provide pupils with opportunity to explore what they think an act of kindness is, and to create a kindness paperchain with their classmates.
There will also be an opportunity for Mevan to respond to questions that have been put forward by your pupils ahead of time, as well as during the live event.
Please share any questions from your pupils prior to the event by emailing membership@literacytrust.org.uk
This free event is recommended for ages 5 to 8 (years 1 to 3/P2 to P4).
Whilst designed for schools, other non-school education settings, or home educators are also welcome to register.
Classroom resources supporting the event
Supplementing the live event, we have created four sessions exploring the theme and message of this year's Refugee Week, Community as a Superpower. Through reading, writing and oracy sessions, pupils will learn what Refugee Week is; why it is important to mark it; explore what community is; understand what an act of kindness is and know how they can make those who are new to the community feel welcome.
Resources will be available to download from the week beginning 19 May on our Refugee Week resources page.
