About the event
Join author A.M. Dassu on Tuesday 17 June, where your class, together with pupils from across the UK, will have the chance to hear from A.M. Dassu and her special guest about their writing, and also how her guest’s experiences as a refugee has influenced the texts they have produced.
Initial discussion will focus on communicating the idea that no matter your age, no matter your experience, you can make a difference. Making others feel heard, making them feel safe, wanted, and part of your community is as powerful as any other gesture.
This will progress into a workshop that will explore ideas for writing a unique pledge based around the message of this year's Refugee Week, Community as a Superpower.
There will also be a Question & Answer session in which our panellists will respond to questions that children have send in before to the event, and also via the Q&A function of the webinar during the event.
Please send any questions from your pupils prior to the event to membership@literacytrust.org.uk.
This event is recommended for ages 8 to 11 (years 4 to 6/P5 to P7).
Whilst it is designed for schools, other non-school education settings, or home educators are also welcome to register.
Classroom resources supporting the event
Supplementing the live event, we have created four sessions exploring the theme and message of this year's Refugee Week, Community as a Superpower. Through reading, writing and oracy sessions, pupils will learn what Refugee Week is; why it is important to mark it; consider what community is; explore acts of kindness and know how they can make a difference to their communities.
Resources will be available to download from the week beginning 19 May on our Refugee Week resources page.
