Every child has the right to read. But what children read – and the ways they engage with reading – are changing.
In the classroom, this presents new challenges and opportunities. How we approach fluency and comprehension must also incorporate the shifting social factors that shape how each child learns and experiences reading.
Join us at Reconstructing Reading: Translating research into powerful classroom practice, an inspirational online festival where international thought leaders and experienced classroom practitioners will unpick and illuminate reading.
About the event
The ages of 4 to 11 mark an important stage for children’s acquisition of key reading skills, laying the foundations for future learning and life outcomes. To fully realise children’s potential for reading enjoyment and comprehension, it’s time to re-evaluate the schemes and strategies that inform our teaching, and rediscover the holistic elements that contribute to the reading experience.
It’s time to rebalance the connection between teaching reading and reading for pleasure. It’s time to reconstruct reading.
At the National Literacy Trust, we have closely followed children’s reading habits in the UK through 20 years of research. In our most recent report, what children told us demonstrated clear opportunities for rethinking how we teach reading in schools. But we know that the reading landscape is global – with schools around the world adapting to the social and technological needs of their pupils.
At Reconstructing Reading, teachers and reading researchers from around the world will put reading research into action.
