South East Wales: Story Quests
Story Quest is a free, family-friendly adventure designed to get children excited about reading and writing. Follow an interactive story trail through local outdoor spaces as you complete fun physical and creative challenges, discover fascinating facts, meet local characters, and travel through time to uncover the area's rich history.
There are currently three Story Quest adventures to explore across South East Wales, each offering a unique family experience. Every trail takes you on a different journey, where you'll solve puzzles, complete interactive activities, and discover the people, places and stories that make each location special. Whether you're exploring a city centre or a nature site, every Story Quest is packed with fun, learning and adventure.
Marching through time: Step into Newport’s past on a free historical story trail, following Sabrin, Grancha Terry and Elizabeth as they uncover Chartist stories and secrets across the city centre.
A Tale of Two Shells: Meet Hazel the squirrel and her ghostly guides on a free historical Story Quest through Pontypool Park, discovering the Chartists and their stories hidden among its paths and gardens.
The Secrets of the Gwent Levels: Follow four friends on a free nature-based Story Quest through the Newport Wetlands, where a mysterious discovery sends them on a time-travelling adventure.
Mae Cyrch Stori yn antur rhad ac am ddim, sy’n addas i deuluoedd, sydd wedi’i llunio i wneud plant yn gyffrous am ddarllen ac ysgrifennu. Dilynwch lwybr stori rhyngweithiol trwy fannau awyr agored lleol wrth i chi gwblhau heriau corfforol a chreadigol llawn hwyl, darganfod ffeithiau cyfareddol, cyfarfod â chymeriadau lleol a theithio drwy amser i ddatgelu hanes cyfoethog yr ardal.

This Story Quest takes place around: Newport city centre, South East Wales.
Starting point: Unity, Prudence and Energy sculpture, Westgate Square, Commercial Road, Newport, NP20 1JN
Duration: Around 60 to 90 minutes.
Activity level: A city centre stroll with plenty of stopping points. There is one set of steps, but a lift is available.
This story trail was created by the National Literacy Trust in partnership with Eden Gate, Patrick Jones, Andy O'Rourke, the Newport Rising Hub and Our Chartist History, Newport Museum, Trosol and the community in Newport. It is generously funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

This Story Quest takes place around: Pontypool Library and Park, South East Wales
Starting point: Pontypool Library, Hanbury Road, Pontypool, NP4 6JL
Duration: Around 60–90 minutes
Activity level: A mostly flat park stroll with benches to rest along the way. There are slopes in the Italian Gardens (on the way to Stop 2) which may be unsuitable for some wheelchairs.

The Secrets of the Gwent Levels
Local children and families can enjoy a free, nature-based story trail across the Newport Wetlands in the Gwent Levels.
The Secrets of the Gwent Levels follows four friends as they explore the wetlands. Families are invited to join them as they find a strange item which leads them on a time travelling adventure. While reading the story, participants will follow in their footsteps and complete a series of activities.
Starting point: The entrance to the trail at Newport Wetlands Nature Reserve, NP18 2BZ
Time needed: About one hour
Activity level: A gentle walk
Age range: Around 7 to 10 years old
