Literacy helps children grow and learn
When children start school, their early communication and literacy skills are vital.
Being able to talk, listen, understand words and share stories will help them learn, make friends and ask for help.
The start they have matters. It sets them up to succeed throughout their education and in life. Yet, more than a quarter of 5-year-olds in Cornwall are starting school without the communication, language and literacy skills to thrive.
That's why the National Literacy Trust in Cornwall is working together with partners and communities in Camborne and Redruth to help little ones build their early literacy skills before they start school.

It’s normal for you and your child to feel a mix of emotions in the lead up to starting school. Your child will have lots of new experiences and things to get used to in their first weeks and months. But the way you spend time together before their first day can help prepare them for this exciting new adventure and give them the best possible start!

Our free booklet is full of simple ways to grow your child's literacy skills through everyday moments, at home and when you're out and about.
