Bes'mam (Eritrean for ‘oh my gosh’)! What a fantastic result! As part of our Home Words campaign we have collected over 400 meaningful words from 75 different languages from Arabic to Yoruba. This celebration of your meaningful words highlights the diverse multilingualism of our great home – Birmingham.

Your Home Words

We had words like Tallawah (Jamaican Patois word that means ‘strong’ and ‘fearless’), Chobble (West Midlands slang for eating loudly), Cwtch (the Welsh word for hug or cuddle) or Gulaabo (Urdu for rosy cheeks) and of course many more.

And of course, our promise to you was to take your cherished words and entrust them, with utmost care, to our three remarkable local poets, who crafted exquisite pieces of poetry from them, which they then performed at our Home Words celebration event.
