About this Early Years Literacy Research and Policy Guide
This essential guide aims to inform and support early years leaders and practitioners, especially those who are leading and developing the literacy curriculum in their setting.
It is designed to help you to make informed, professional decisions about literacy planning and practices, shaping sustainable, evidence-based strategies.
Literacy in the Early Years
Oral language development plays a leading role in educational success. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework emphasises language and vocabulary, recognising that early literacy is fundamentally rooted in language. All learning areas for young pupils rely on strong language skills. Once a solid foundation in language development is established, other literacy skills – such as phonics, reading, and writing – can be effectively taught.
This document draws insights from recent years’ developments, policies, and research projects, focusing on supporting our youngest learners through effective communication and language interventions, especially in collaboration with parents.
Early Years Literacy Audit Tool
To supplement the Guide, we've also provided a self-audit tool allowing you to assess your existing provision. By exploring statements of good practice, you and your team can use this tool to identify strengths in your setting, as well as those areas that would benefit from a renewed focus, relevant training, or revised approaches.
