Investigating communication, language and literacy development in the early years sector in 2011

Added 03 Jan 2011 | Updated 14 Aug 17

Nursery World and the National Literacy Trust launched its language development survey to celebrate Hello; the national year of communication in May 2011. The National Literacy Trust teamed up with Nursery World to carry out research into the sector’s support for children’s language and literacy development.

221 early years professionals participated in this survey, which was online from April to May 2011.

We show that in 2011 there was a great awareness of language and literacy issues in the early years sector and widespread commitment to supporting them. However, the research also shows that there were major concerns about the support available to practitioners, which could have been exacerbated by potential cutbacks in the sector.
