Support children's reading with a Literacy Toolkit

Help more children living in the UK's most disadvantaged communities to develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills with one of our Literacy Toolkits.

What is a Literacy Toolkit?

A Literacy Toolkit is a set of books, activities and resources that we have developed to support the development of children's reading, writing, speaking and listening skills within schools in the UK's most disadvantaged communities.

We have produced two literacy toolkits, themed around the topics of wellbeing and inclusivity. They contain:

  • 50 books
  • Discussion questions
  • Activity booklets
  • Story sack: a selection of objects which help younger children to act out and visualise a story
  • Other resources to support children's literacy development.

The Literacy Toolkits cost £850 each, and will provide a primary school or community organisation with invaluable resources to support children's literacy development as well as their knowledge and understanding of wellbeing and inclusivity.

Inclusivity Literacy Toolkit

Our research tells us that 2 in 5 children and young people find it difficult to find books with characters who are like them. This is higher for children who are receiving free school meals and those from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds.

Research from the Empathy Lab also shows that 'the empathy we feel for book characters wires our brains to have the same sensitivity towards real people.'

Our Inclusivity Literacy Toolkit contains books written by and about a range of different people from all walks of life. This booklist has been reviewed by our team to ensure it's as diverse as possible, and we have developed activities which sensitively encourage children to talk about their own life experiences, as well as be curious about others.

Wellbeing Literacy Toolkit

In 2021, one in six children aged five to 16 were identified as having a probable mental health problem, a steep increase from previous years. This is linked to factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change and social media.

While there is no silver bullet for tackling these issues, engaging with books in a safe and supportive environment is one way for children to explore topics which may impact their mental health.

Our Wellbeing Literacy Toolkit contains books that explore themes such as confidence and growing up - relatable issues throughout primary school. However, with the opportunity to read these books and explore their themes, children will have the opportunity to work through and discuss these feelings.

Fill in the form to gift a Literacy Toolkit to your local school or community organisation and change more children's lives through literacy.
