What is this event?

TeachBrief Live is a termly webinar for primary literacy leads, offering practical strategies and resources to help you boost outcomes and tackle the UK’s literacy crisis. Connect with peers, stay updated on literacy developments, and gain confidence in leading change across your school. Delivered by the National Literacy Trust, it’s your go-to national literacy briefing.

Following our successful inaugural webinar in the autumn term, we are delighted to announce that the second TeachBrief Live will be offered free of charge as part of the National Year of Reading.

What's on the agenda?

This session will explore the potential implications of the DfE Curriculum and Assessment Review in England and consider how oracy, book talk, and comprehension connects with current school priorities during the National Year of Reading. Our panel, Head of Professional Learning and Partnerships Martin Galway, plus education practitioners Nicola Izibili and Ruth Baker-Leask, will offer timely insight, shared language, and practical ideas to help schools align curriculum priorities with confidence.

Key Themes

  • Why oracy matters now, and how viewing talk as a core part of learning - rather than an add-on - can support equity, access, and pupil progress.
  • How purposeful book talk, grounded in diverse and representative texts, can deepen comprehension, encourage critical thinking, and increase reading engagement.
  • What the evidence says about talk as an effective lever for improvement, including insights from the Education Endowment Foundation on literacy and wider outcomes.
  • Practical ways talk and drama can be used to strengthen understanding and create meaningful links across the curriculum.
