This online training involves two hour-long sessions and introduces teachers to interactive discussion and vocabulary activities for mathematics learning.

Course content
Focus:
This training highlights the role of language in the Key Stage 3 mathematics classroom and promotes ways of developing talk, reading and vocabulary in the subject.
Format:
The course consists of two, 60-minute online sessions which have been designed to facilitate interactive learning and may include all or some of the following:
- Pre- and post-course reading or tasks
- Group discussion in break-out rooms
- Trialling teaching and learning approaches
- Personal reflection and planning time
- Sharing responses via the chat function
Audience:
Early-career mathematics teachers and support staff, including those working with EAL and SEN groups, whole-school literacy coordinators
In these sessions participants will:
- Understand what is meant by disciplinary literacy in mathematics
- Use evidence from research to investigate effective literacy strategies for speaking and reading about mathematics
- Explore strategies for improving speaking, reading and vocabulary in mathematics
