Why Oracy?

Oracy is vital to primary literacy and a lever for social mobility.

Good speaking and listening skills underpin reading and writing. Children who struggle with spoken language at age five are six times more likely to fall below the expected level in reading and writing at age 11 – as evidenced in our new policy report: Creating confident communicators: How the government can help every child find their voice.

To give children the best start in school and life, oracy must be considered integral to teaching literacy in KS1 and KS2.

Who should attend?

For all primary practitioners who wish to improve oracy provision in their settings, including teachers and leads across all subjects including English, and SMTs.

Why choose this course?

Here’s what teachers have to say about this CPD:

'[The most valuable part of the training was…] Sharing a range of creative strategies for developing oracy, such as a using book talk and visual starting points, and providing guidance and starting points for creating our own school progression documents.'

'The training was extremely inspiring and helpful as well as refreshing to receive such clear and positive messages about oracy. The trainer had great enthusiasm and a depth of knowledge, along with an understanding of the demands of working within a school.'

Research and evidence-based approach:

"The average impact of oral language interventions is approximately an additional six months’ progress over the course of a year. Approaches that focus on speaking, listening and a combination of the two all show positive impacts on attainment."
