Secondary CPD: Developing literacy in physical education

This course

Build an understanding of the role of literacy in the secondary physical education curriculum, and how to promote ways of developing talk, reading and writing in this subject.

This online training involves two 90-minute sessions

Part 1: Tuesday 11 November 2025 15:30-17:00

Part 2: Tuesday 18 November 2025 15:30-17:00

Course content

Across the two sessions we will:

• Use evidence from research and theory to investigate effective literacy strategies for teaching and learning in physical education
• Use oral discussion and group work strategies to build subject knowledge and vocabulary for KS3
• Develop knowledge and strategies for teaching vocabulary, etymology and morphology
• Be able to use active reading strategies to engage with a variety of subject texts.
• Use models and sentence combining strategies to improve extended answers at KS4
