Women in Leadership students

Celebrating International Women’s Day

As part of the Words for Work Women in Leadership programme in partnership with Lancôme we launched a competition and shared an activity programme for young women and non-binary students in post-16 education.

The programme resources and competition celebrate the voices of women and the theme of International Women's Day 2024 #InspireInclusion.

The resources share our favourite spoken word poetry to inspire your students’ own writing.

  • What message do you want to share to celebrate women?
  • Can your words inspire and empower other women?

International Women’s Day poetry challenge

Use these resources to create poetry around this year's theme #InspireInclusion

  • Suitable for: pupils in KS4 and KS5.
  • Useful for: classroom teachers, literacy co-ordinators, school librarians, form tutors
  • Use: classroom teaching ideas and activities for literacy and PSHE

Participating in the challenge 2024

We invited schools and students (KS4/5) at education settings in the UK to participate by using our poetry resources and submitting examples of great work.

The closing date for submissions was Friday 5 April 2024.

Thanks to all those who have sent in entries - we've been delighted to see your work. If your students are successful in winning a prize, we'll be in touch soon.

You can contact the Words for Work team by email on wfw@literacytrust.org.uk if you have any questions.

Even though the competition is now closed, you are welcome to continue to download and use the materials to inspire your students.

Resources for younger students (ages 3 to 14)

At the start of March, when spring is just around the corner and daffodils are blooming, it's time to celebrate International Women’s Day. What better opportunity to deliver thought-provoking literacy activities exploring inspirational women?

Our classroom resource offers lots of literacy activities and ideas to mark this annual celebration including:

  • Book recommendations to read aloud and generate discussion with pupils in Early Years, KS1, KS2 and KS3/Early, First, Second and Third Level (ages 4 to 14)
  • Suggestions for speaking and listening activities including storytelling inspired by role models
  • Writing ideas from poetry to science experiments

Download the resource from the list below. The activities are designed to be adaptable for teachers working across different age ranges, and for the time you have available.
