School Transition Resources for Salford Schools
Transition from primary school to secondary school can be a tricky time. Through these reading-based transition activities inspired by author and poet Matt Goodfellow's book, The First Year, we hope pupils will discover an enjoyment of reading, helping them to build confidence, feel more relaxed and happy, and support them through this period.
These resources have been created by our expert team at the National Literacy Trust in Salford, with support from Salford City Council to empower pupils moving from primary to secondary education with the knowledge, confidence and literacy skills they need to succeed.

Download our Transition Teacher Guide
In this guide, you'll find a selection of reading-based transition activities inspired by Matt Goodfellow's The First Year.
We encourage you to read and explore the book with your pupils alongside delivering the activities, to provide further enrichment, support transition and foster reading for pleasure. We recognise that the curriculum time may not stretch to explore the book and its themes as fully as you wish, so activities included in this guide have been designed to allow classes to dip into the book as needed.
