Inspiring children’s literacy through football with the Premier League

PLPS

We are a key partner for Premier League Primary Stars, the Premier League’s new schools programme. It was launched in September 2016 and is already being used by 10,000 primary schools. Our English resources, including our tried and tested reading programme, Premier League Reading Stars, provide teachers with resources that use the excitement of football and the star power of the Premier League clubs to inspire and motivate children to improve their literacy.

Our partnership with the Premier League includes high quality English resources, guidance and training for teachers, and exciting author events for pupils. We have also given away over 60,000 free books so far this year.

Premier League Primary Stars builds on Premier League Reading Stars, a programme that we have run in schools since 2003. This programme is proven to boost literacy skills and motivation of primary school pupils. An evaluation by Coventry University found that 3 out of 4 children made at least 6 months progress in reading in just 10 weeks, and 1 child in 3 made a year’s progress or more.

“I wanted to extend my sincere appreciation for the support that Premier League Primary Stars has given to me and my school. We were lucky enough to receive a box of books and the sports kit. Thank you! The resource that we got that I have found to have had a considerable impact was Premier League Reading Stars. This had a huge impact in home reading in my class. At the beginning of the year just 16% were reading at home 4+ times a week. Now, it is an amazing 85%.”
