Donate this Christmas
A book can change a life story this Christmas.
At the National Literacy Trust, we know that reading has the power to transform a child's life. That's why we're asking for your support this Christmas to give every child access to books they love.
The Reading Crisis
Our latest research paints a heart-breaking picture - children's enjoyment of reading has reached an all-time low. In fact, 2 out of 3 children and young people do not enjoy reading during their free time.
This crisis hits the most disadvantaged communities hardest. In areas of high poverty, 1 in 8 children don't even have a single book at home.
Without access to the joy and opportunity that reading provides, these children are being left behind. Their futures are at risk of being defined by inequality, not their dreams.
Our solution
The National Literacy Trust is committed to rewriting this story. With your support, we can:
-
Put books into the hands of children who need them most
-
Bring creative literacy programmes into schools and communities
-
Equip teachers and librarians to inspire a lifelong love of reading
A life changed through reading
“Before taking part in the National Literacy Trust’s Young Readers Programme there was an apathy towards reading and books. Now there’s a real buzz! A lot of the children don’t have books of their own at home, so being able to choose books to keep is really special and exciting for them.”
Deborah Toussaint, acting assistant head and English lead at St Augustine’s C of E Primary School
Help us to turn the page
The future isn't written for these children. With your donation this Christmas, you can ensure their next chapter is filled with possibility, not struggle.
Where does your money go?
Your gift will put books into eager hands, inspire a lifelong love of reading, and open doors to new worlds of opportunity.
£7 could give a child the chance to experience the wonder of stories and discover books they love at one of our fun community events.
£15 could enable us to gift books to children living in disadvantaged communities across the UK where 1 in 8 children don’t have a book of their own.
£20 could allow a child to attend a storytelling event or inspirational reading programme where they can choose and keep three new books.
£50 could help us to train more volunteers to empower parents struggling with low literacy levels with the knowledge and confidence needed to help develop their child’s literacy skills.
“Teaching for over two decades has shown me that reading is not just about literacy, it’s about giving children a chance in life. When children learn to read with joy, they unlock doors to learning across every subject.”
Deborah Toussaint, acting assistant head and English lead at St Augustine’s C of E Primary School
Together, we can rewrite the story for children in need. This Christmas, you have the power to change a life story.
