Take part in our new survey exploring video game playing and reading and writing engagement

Video games are a popular cultural activity for many young people. Our previous research found that video game playing can:

  • inspire wider reading, writing and communication
  • offer a sense of immersion in stories, particularly for boys and those less engaged with more traditional literacy
  • support identity, connection and wellbeing

In the National Year of Reading 2026, we are revisiting and updating our earlier research with a new survey of children and young people aged 8 to 18. Launching in May 2026, the survey will explore video game playing and reading and writing engagement, as well as exploring new topics including representation and digital literacy.

Your participation will help us to build an up‑to‑date picture of young people’s literacy lives in 2026. The survey is designed to be short and easy to run. All participating schools receive a personalised school report outlining findings for their pupils, which can be compared with national findings. Findings may also support:

  • pupil voice
  • evidence on reading and writing beyond the classroom and
  • literacy strategy development or curriculum planning.

To express an interest in taking part, please register below and we will be in touch with more information. The survey is due to open on May 18 2026.
