Back to School: activities to help Year 6 classes hit the ground running

SPL Young Readers Programme

As schools welcome Year 6 children back to the classroom, we have gathered our engaging reading, writing and skill building activities for students to get stuck into in these last few weeks of term, or for summer school provision.

We understand that reintroducing children to the classroom in this challenging time is a difficult task and want to help teachers support students' literacy. We have removed restrictions on several resources and our Skills Academy programme is currently available for free.

The summer term can be an anxious time for Year 6 children as they prepare to transition to secondary school, especially in these unprecedented circumstances. Building their literacy skills can help them feel positive about this change. Several activities below are focused on children’s wellbeing during this transition.

You will find our top selection of literacy building activities aimed at 10-11-year-olds below.

What’s more, teachers can also use the free digital books, exclusive author videos and engaging literacy activities on our new Family Zone site to support children's learning as well.
