Make a treasure map

Pirate toy

This fun activity will show your little one how to make their own treasure map. You can use it to make a treasure hunt in your home!

Here’s an example of what the treasure map could look like:

Treasure map

You can make some treasure for your adventure. You can colour in bits of paper to look like coins, or use something your child enjoys, like their favourite toys. Hide these around your home.

Then start making the map. Draw a picture of the rooms the treasure is in. Put an ‘X’ where the treasure is hidden. Now you and your little one can go hunting for the treasure together, using the map! You can take it in turns laying the treasure hunt and making the map.

For a bit of extra fun, you can act out being pirates on your hunt. You could dress up like pirates. Here’s a few pirate sayings to help you get the hang of it:

  • Shiver me timbers, ye be close!’ means ‘Wow you are really close!’
  • Avast! Ye be running aground!’ means ‘Stop! You’re going the wrong way!’
  • You scallywag!’ means ‘You rascal!’

Encourage your child to think up a pirate name and a back story for themselves.
