We conducted our latest Annual Literacy Survey between January and mid-March 2020. Given the changed environment this spring, we conducted another survey to explore children and young people's literacy behaviours during lockdown between April and May.
In these surveys, we included questions on children and young people’s listening habits, focusing on audiobooks and podcasts. We will be publishing a report in the coming weeks outlining our findings on podcasts, but key insights include:
- 1 in 5 (19.6%) children and young people aged 9 to 18 said they listened to podcasts at the beginning of the year
- During lockdown, nearly 1 in 4 (23.4%) children and young people said that they have listened to audiobooks and podcasts more than before lockdown
Following our initial findings, we are keen to find out more about children and young people’s motivations and behaviours around listening to podcasts. We are not only looking to gain further insight into the impact of the pandemic on these motivations and behaviours, but also into how podcasts might excite children and young people’s interest in a wide range of subjects and support their learning.

This particular survey is targeted at secondary and post-16 students (year 6 and above). All participating schools will get their own individual school report of the headline findings pertaining to the school. You can use your school-specific report to compare to findings nationally when we publish the overall report in spring 2021. In the meantime, you could use these results to consider how you might embed podcasts in your teaching and to get a picture of your own students’ attitudes and behaviours.
